“But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”

Context:The Book of James is a New Testament epistle written by James, the half-brother of Jesus. It is believed to have been written to Jewish Christians scattered throughout various regions. The book focuses on practical Christian living and addresses issues such as faith, trials, wisdom, and the importance of good works.

The Perfect Law of Liberty:In this verse, James refers to the “perfect law of liberty.” This phrase indicates that believers are no longer bound by the Mosaic Law but are under the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2). This law is characterized by freedom and grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

Looking into the Perfect Law:James encourages believers to “look into” or carefully examine the perfect law of liberty. This implies an active and intentional engagement with the Scriptures. By studying and understanding God’s Word, believers gain insight into the principles and teachings of Christ.

Continueth Therein:It is not enough to merely read or study the Scriptures; James emphasizes the importance of continuing in the perfect law. This means applying its teachings consistently and persistently in one’s life. The Word of God should guide and shape our thoughts, attitudes, and actions on a daily basis.

Not a Forgetful Hearer:James warns against being a forgetful hearer of the Word. Simply listening to sermons or reading the Bible without putting its teachings into practice is futile. True faith should be accompanied by obedience and a genuine desire to live according to God’s Word.

A Doer of the Work:James emphasizes the need for action. Being a doer of the Word means actively living out the principles and commands found in Scripture. It involves demonstrating love, kindness, honesty, and other virtues in our interactions with others.

Blessed in His Deed:James concludes this verse by promising a blessing to the one who is a doer of the work. This blessing encompasses both spiritual and practical aspects. It may include a deep sense of fulfilment, joy, and a closer relationship with God. Additionally, living out God’s Word often leads to positive outcomes and rewards in various areas of life.
