James 3:4

Posted on 18 May at 14:22
Listen to this article

“Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.”

Context:The book of James is a letter written by James, believed to be the brother of Jesus, to the Jewish Christians scattered abroad. In James 3, the focus is on controlling the tongue and the power of words.

Symbolism of Ships:In James 3:4, James uses the analogy of ships to illustrate the power of the tongue. Ships, although large and driven by strong winds, are controlled and directed by a small helm or rudder. Similarly, the tongue, though small in size, has great power to influence and direct the course of a person’s life.

Comparison to the Tongue:James compares the tongue to the small helm of a ship. Just as the helm guides the ship, the tongue has the power to guide and direct our lives. It has the ability to steer us toward righteousness or lead us astray. Despite its small size, the tongue can have a significant impact on our relationships, actions, and overall character.

Importance of Control:James emphasises the importance of controlling the tongue. In the preceding verses (James 3:1-3), he warns about the accountability and responsibility of teachers, highlighting the need for self-control in their speech. Uncontrolled words can cause great damage, hurt others, and lead to negative consequences.

Whithersoever the Governor Listeth:James further emphasises the power of the helm to direct the ship wherever the governor or helmsman desires. Similarly, our tongues have the potential to determine the course of our lives and the lives of those around us. It is crucial to exercise wisdom, thoughtfulness, and discernment in our speech, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide and direct our words.

Application:James 3:4 challenges us to be mindful of the power of our words and to exercise control over our tongues. We should strive to speak words that build up, encourage, and bring life to others. By seeking God’s guidance and submitting our tongues to His control, we can use our speech to honour Him and positively impact those around us.

In conclusion, James 3:4 serves as a reminder of the immense power of the tongue. Just as a small helm can steer a large ship, our words have the ability to guide the direction of our lives. It is crucial to exercise self-control and seek God’s wisdom in our speech, using our words to bring about positive change and reflect the character of Christ.
