Jeremiah 1:5

Listen to this article

“Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”

Context:Jeremiah is one of the major prophets in the Old Testament. He was called by God to be a prophet during the reign of King Josiah of Judah. This verse records the divine commissioning of Jeremiah, highlighting God’s foreknowledge, sanctification, and ordination of Jeremiah for a specific purpose.

Divine Foreknowledge:The verse begins by emphasising God’s foreknowledge of Jeremiah before his conception. This highlights the divine perspective that exists beyond the limitations of human understanding. It signifies that God has knowledge of us even before we are formed in the womb, showcasing His intimate involvement and personal interest in our lives.

Sanctification:The verse further states that God sanctified Jeremiah before his birth. Sanctification implies being set apart or consecrated for a holy purpose. In this case, God had set Jeremiah apart for a specific task. This highlights the divine calling and separation that comes with God’s purpose for an individual’s life.

Divine Ordination:God not only knew and sanctified Jeremiah but also ordained him as a prophet to the nations. This emphasises that Jeremiah’s purpose and role were predetermined by God. Jeremiah was chosen and appointed by God to be His messenger, declaring His words to the people of Judah and the surrounding nations.

Application:

  • Jeremiah 1:5 carries a broader application for believers today. It reminds us that God has a plan and purpose for each of our lives. Just as God had a specific calling for Jeremiah, He has a unique plan for every individual. God’s foreknowledge, sanctification, and ordination demonstrate His sovereign will and involvement in our lives.

This verse encourages us to seek God’s guidance and direction, knowing that He has a purpose for us. It also serves as a reminder that God’s plans are not confined to our earthly existence but extend beyond, encompassing eternity.
