Jeremiah 10:10

Listen to this article

“But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.”

Context:Jeremiah 10:10 is found in the book of Jeremiah, which is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. Jeremiah was a prophet who ministered to the southern kingdom of Judah during a time of great spiritual decline and impending judgement.

The True God:In this verse, the prophet Jeremiah declares that the LORD (Yahweh) is the true God. It emphasises the uniqueness and exclusivity of God. There are many false gods and idols worshipped by the nations, but only the LORD is the true and living God.

The Living God:Jeremiah also emphasises that God is not a lifeless idol made by human hands but is the living God. Unlike the idols, God is alive, active, and capable of interacting with His creation. He is not restricted to a particular place or confined to a man-made object.

Everlasting King:The verse highlights that God is an everlasting king. Unlike earthly kings who have limited reigns, God’s rule is eternal. He is the ultimate authority and ruler over all creation. This reminds us of God’s sovereignty and the fact that His kingdom will endure forever.

God’s Wrath:The verse mentions that at God’s wrath, the earth trembles, and the nations cannot endure His indignation. This conveys the idea that God’s righteous anger is a force to be reckoned with. It demonstrates His power and the consequences that result from opposing Him. It serves as a warning to those who rebel against God’s commands and refuse to acknowledge Him as the true God.

Application:As believers, this verse reminds us of the importance of recognising and worshipping the true and living God. We should not be deceived by false gods or idols that offer no real power or salvation. We must remember that God is an everlasting king, and His authority demands our reverence and obedience. Additionally, the verse encourages us to take seriously the consequences of opposing God and His ways, and to seek His forgiveness and grace.

  • Overall, Jeremiah 10:10 serves as a powerful declaration of the uniqueness and sovereignty of God, urging us to acknowledge Him as the true God, worship Him alone, and live in accordance with His will.
