Jeremiah 11:13

Posted on 18 May at 14:14

“For according to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem have ye set up altars to that shameful thing, even altars to burn incense unto Baal.”

Context:Jeremiah was a prophet who delivered God’s messages to the people of Judah during a time of great spiritual decline and impending judgment. In this particular verse, God speaks through Jeremiah to address the wickedness and idolatry prevalent among the people.

Historical Background:During Jeremiah’s time, the nation of Judah had turned away from the worship of the true God and had embraced idolatry. They had erected altars and offered incense to Baal, a false god associated with fertility, prosperity, and power. This idolatry had spread throughout the land, with altars being set up in many cities and even on the streets of Jerusalem.

Condemnation of Idolatry:God expresses His displeasure with the people of Judah for their worship of false gods and the proliferation of idolatrous practices. Instead of honoring and worshiping Him, they had multiplied their gods according to the number of their cities. This indicates the extent to which idolatry had taken hold in the nation.

The Shameful Altars:The people had set up altars to “that shameful thing,” referring to Baal, the false god they had chosen to worship. God considers this idolatrous worship as a disgraceful act because it dishonors Him and goes against His commandments.

Spiritual Adultery:In the Bible, idolatry is often compared to spiritual adultery. God had established a covenant with His people, and by worshiping false gods, they were unfaithful to Him. They were forsaking the one true God who had delivered them from Egypt and was their rightful Lord and Savior.

Consequences of Idolatry:The idolatry of Judah carried severe consequences. In the following verses, God declares judgment against the people for their disobedience. He warns of impending destruction and captivity as a result of their persistent idolatry and refusal to turn back to Him.
