Jeremiah 11:9
And the Lord said unto me, A conspiracy is found among the men of Judah, and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Jeremiah 11:9 (KJV)
Context
Jeremiah prophesied during the reigns of Judah’s final kings, including the wicked King Jehoiakim. The nation had turned from God to idolatry and had broken the covenant and its commandments. In Jeremiah 11:1-13, God commands Jeremiah to proclaim the words of the covenant to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and then reveals the reason for impending judgment: a conspiracy is found among them.
Meaning
The Hebrew word translated “conspiracy” (qesher) literally means “a binding” or “a joining together.” Here it denotes a secret, organized plot. This conspiracy is not against the king or civil government, but against God Himself—against His covenant, His word, and His worship. The people have collectively turned away from the Lord, broken His covenant, and pursued idolatry. The verse emphasizes that this rebellion is not merely individual but corporate, involving both the leaders and the general population of Judah and Jerusalem.
God opens this secret to Jeremiah, showing that nothing is hidden from Him. Even when people attempt to conceal their plans, God reveals their intentions through His prophet, underscoring His omniscience and His ability to uncover hidden conspiracies.
Biblical connections
The immediate context in Jeremiah 11:10 clarifies that they have returned to the sins of their ancestors, refused to listen to God’s words, and followed other gods, breaking the covenant that God made with their ancestors. This conspiracy sets the stage for the covenant curses that God will bring upon them, as warned in Leviticus 26:14-43 and Deuteronomy 28:15-68.
Application
This passage reminds us that God sees and knows our thoughts, intentions, and actions, even those we try to hide. It calls us to honesty and transparency before God, acknowledging our shortcomings and seeking His forgiveness. We are invited to examine our own hearts: Are there areas where we are acting against God’s will? Are we aligning our lives with His commandments and the principles of His Word? Evaluating our motives helps ensure we live in accordance with God’s plan and purposes.
Reflection
Jeremiah highlights God’s knowledge of secret plots and His warning of impending judgment. The passage prompts us to reflect on our own lives, ensuring that we are not conspiring against God’s will but are living in obedience to Him.
