Posted on 18 May at 15:02
Listen to this article

“Therefore thou shalt say this word unto them; Let mine eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease: for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous blow.”

Context:It’s important to understand the context in which Jeremiah 14:17 was written. The book of Jeremiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, and it contains the prophecies and messages of the prophet Jeremiah to the people of Judah during a time of great spiritual and political turmoil. The nation of Judah had turned away from God and had been persistently disobedient. Jeremiah’s prophecies often warned of the impending judgment and exile that would come upon the people if they did not repent.

The Prophet’s Lament:In Jeremiah 14:17, the prophet Jeremiah is instructed to deliver a message to the people of Judah. This message is filled with sorrow and lamentation. Jeremiah is told to let his eyes run down with tears day and night, emphasizing the deep sorrow he feels for his people. The phrase “for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous blow” describes the devastating condition of the people of Judah. It signifies the destruction and judgment that would come upon them as a consequence of their rebellion against God.

Spiritual and National Crisis:The reference to the “virgin daughter of my people” represents the nation of Judah. This metaphorical language emphasizes the vulnerability and purity of the nation, which has been broken and devastated. The “great breach” and “very grievous blow” symbolize the spiritual and national crisis that Judah was facing. It implies that the people were experiencing severe suffering and the consequences of their unfaithfulness to God.

God’s Judgment and Call to Repentance:The passage reflects God’s judgment upon the people of Judah due to their persistent disobedience. Despite the impending judgment, it also conveys God’s compassion and concern through Jeremiah’s tears. God, through His prophet, is calling the people to repentance and urging them to turn back to Him. The tears of Jeremiah express both his personal grief and God’s desire for the people to recognize their sins and seek forgiveness.

Application:Jeremiah 14:17 can serve as a reminder of the importance of obedience to God’s commands and the consequences of turning away from Him. It shows us that God is deeply affected by our disobedience and longs for our repentance. We can learn from this passage by examining our own lives and considering whether there are areas where we have strayed from God’s will. It prompts us to seek God’s forgiveness and turn back to Him, trusting in His mercy and grace.

  • In conclusion, Jeremiah 14:17 portrays the prophet Jeremiah’s lamentation over the broken state of the nation of Judah and serves as a call to repentance. It highlights the consequences of disobedience and the need for individuals and communities to return to God in humility and seek His forgiveness.
