Jeremiah 16:7

Posted on 18 May at 15:02
Listen to this article

“Neither shall men tear themselves for them in mourning, to comfort them for the dead; neither shall men give them the cup of consolation to drink for their father or for their mother.”

Context:To understand the verse better, it is important to consider the context. In this chapter, Jeremiah is receiving a message from the Lord about the impending judgment and destruction that will come upon Judah and Jerusalem due to their persistent disobedience and idolatry. The Lord tells Jeremiah not to take a wife or have children in that place because of the calamities that are about to befall the land.

Mourning customs:In the verse, Jeremiah is given a specific instruction from the Lord regarding mourning customs. During that time, it was customary for people to mourn and comfort the bereaved by tearing their clothes and offering them a cup of consolation. These actions were symbolic gestures of expressing grief and providing comfort during times of loss.

A break in mourning customs:However, in this message, the Lord tells Jeremiah that there will be no mourning rituals for the dead. The people of Judah would experience such devastation and destruction that normal mourning customs would cease. The judgment would be so severe that there would be no opportunity for the traditional expressions of mourning and comfort.

Divine judgment:This verse illustrates the severity of the judgment that God would bring upon His people due to their persistent disobedience. It indicates that the calamity would be so great that normal social customs, such as mourning, would no longer be observed.

God’s sovereignty:Ultimately, this verse points to God’s sovereignty and His ability to bring judgment upon a nation or people. It underscores the importance of obedience and faithfulness to God’s commands.
