Jeremiah 17:20

Listen to this article

“And say unto them, Hear ye the word of the Lord, ye kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, that enter in by these gates.”

Context:The book of Jeremiah is a collection of prophecies delivered by the prophet Jeremiah during a time of great spiritual decline and impending judgment upon Judah. The message of Jeremiah is primarily directed towards the people of Judah, including their leaders and inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Audience:In Jeremiah 17:20, the intended recipients of the message are addressed as the “kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem.” This means that both the political rulers and the general population were to hear the word of the Lord.

Divine Command:The verse starts with a command, “And say unto them.” Jeremiah is instructed to communicate a specific message from God to the kings and all the people of Judah. It highlights the importance of the message and the urgency for its reception.

Message to the Kings:By addressing the “kings of Judah,” God emphasizes that even the rulers are not exempt from accountability and must pay attention to His word. The kings had significant influence over the nation and were responsible for leading the people in righteousness. This message serves as a reminder of their duty to listen to God’s voice.

Message to All Judah and Jerusalem:The inclusion of “all Judah” and “all the inhabitants of Jerusalem” demonstrates the all-encompassing nature of the message. The call to hear the word of the Lord is extended to everyone within the region, regardless of their status or position. God desires the attention and obedience of the entire community.

Entrance through the Gates:The reference to those “that enter in by these gates” suggests that this message was proclaimed at the entrance points of Jerusalem or at the city gates, where people would gather. It implies that God wanted His word to be widely disseminated and heard by as many people as possible.

Jeremiah 17:20 reminds us of the importance of heeding God’s word, regardless of our position or status. It encourages us to pay attention to His instructions, seek His guidance, and align our lives with His will. By doing so, we can experience His blessings and avoid the consequences of disobedience.

Remember to study the surrounding verses and chapters to gain a deeper understanding of the broader context and the message conveyed through the book of Jeremiah as a whole.
