Jeremiah 19:11

Posted on 18 May at 15:02
Listen to this article

“And shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a potter’s vessel, that cannot be made whole again: and they shall bury them in Tophet, till there be no place to bury.”

Context and Background:Jeremiah was a prophet who delivered God’s messages to the people of Judah before and during their exile in Babylon. In this particular passage, Jeremiah is instructed by God to deliver a prophecy of judgment against Jerusalem because of the people’s disobedience and idolatry.

Symbolism of the Potter’s Vessel:In this verse, God uses the metaphor of a potter’s vessel to illustrate the impending destruction and irreparable brokenness of Jerusalem and its people. A potter’s vessel represents something that is fragile and easily broken. By saying that He will break the people and the city like a potter’s vessel, God emphasizes the severity of the judgment and the finality of the destruction. It signifies that the consequences of their sin and rebellion are irreversible.

Tophet:The mention of “Tophet” refers to a specific place outside the walls of Jerusalem, where idolatrous practices took place. It was associated with the worship of the pagan god Molech, where children were sacrificed in the fire. God declares that Jerusalem’s inhabitants will be buried in Tophet until there is no more space left, indicating a large-scale devastation and loss of life.

Divine Judgment and Consequences:Jeremiah 19:11 reveals God’s righteous judgment against the people of Jerusalem for their persistent disobedience and idolatry. Despite numerous warnings and opportunities for repentance, they continued to follow false gods and engage in wicked practices. As a result, God decreed that their city and their lives would be broken and destroyed.

  • Consequences of Sin:This passage highlights the seriousness of sin and its consequences. Just as Jerusalem faced destruction due to their rebellion, we should recognize that our actions have consequences both in this life and the eternal perspective.
  • God’s Righteousness and Judgment:God’s judgment against Jerusalem demonstrates His righteousness and His intolerance for persistent disobedience. It reminds us that God is just and will hold us accountable for our actions.
  • The Importance of Repentance:Although this particular verse focuses on impending judgment, the broader context of Jeremiah emphasizes the call to repentance. God desires reconciliation with His people and offers the opportunity for forgiveness and restoration if they turn away from their sin.
  • The Fragility of Human Strength:The comparison of the people to a potter’s vessel underscores the vulnerability and fragility of human strength and accomplishments. It serves as a reminder that apart from God, our efforts are futile, and only in Him can we find true security and strength.

In summary, Jeremiah 19:11 reveals God’s judgment against Jerusalem and its people for their persistent disobedience and idolatry. It emphasizes the irreparable brokenness and destruction that will befall them, serving as a warning about the consequences of sin and the importance of repentance.
