Jeremiah 21:3

Then saide Ieremiah vnto them. Thus shall yee say to Zedekiah, Jeremiah 21:3 (KJV)

Jeremiah 21:3 is part of a prophecy delivered by the prophet Jeremiah to King Zedekiah of Judah. At the time, Jerusalem was under siege by the Babylonians, and Zedekiah sought Jeremiah’s counsel and intervention from God. This verse serves as God’s response to Zedekiah’s inquiry. The verse begins with Jeremiah relaying the message from God to Zedekiah, in which the LORD addresses Himself as the “LORD GOD of Israel,” establishing His authority and relationship with His chosen people. God declares that He will “turn back the sword” in the hands of the people of Judah, meaning the weapon they were using against the Babylonians would become ineffective. He also says He will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, wherewith ye fight against the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans, and will assemble them into the midst of this city. This indicates that God will bring the Babylonian army inside the city walls, leading to Jerusalem’s fall. The verse emphasizes the futility of Judah’s military resistance against the Babylonians. It reveals God’s sovereign control over the circumstances and His ability to determine the outcome of the conflict. Despite the distressing situation, the prophecy communicated that Judah’s reliance on military might alone would not save them. God wanted them to understand that their only hope lay in turning to Him, seeking repentance, and submitting to His will. This passage reflects a broader theme found throughout the book of Jeremiah: the call for Judah to repent and turn back to God. The siege of Jerusalem and the impending exile were part of God’s judgment upon His people because of their persistent disobedience and idolatry. Jeremiah’s prophecies aimed to bring about a spiritual awakening and a genuine return to God.
