Jeremiah 23:14

Posted on 18 May at 15:01

“I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness; they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.”

Context:To fully grasp the meaning of this verse, it’s important to understand the historical context. Jeremiah was a prophet who ministered in Judah during a time of spiritual and moral decline. The nation had turned away from God, and false prophets had emerged, preaching messages of peace and security while disregarding the people’s need for repentance and righteousness.

Prophets of Jerusalem:The verse specifically addresses the prophets of Jerusalem, who were responsible for delivering divine messages to the people. However, these prophets had turned to wickedness themselves. They were committing adultery, engaging in sexual immorality, and walking in lies, deceit, and false teachings. Instead of leading people back to God, they were leading them further astray.

Strengthening the hands of evildoers:The false prophets not only indulged in immoral behavior themselves but also supported and encouraged others in their wickedness. They did not rebuke or challenge evildoers to turn away from their sins. Instead, they strengthened the hands of those who were engaged in wrongdoing, enabling them to continue in their sinful ways.

Comparison to Sodom and Gomorrah:The verse concludes by comparing the false prophets and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. These cities were infamous for their extreme wickedness and sexual immorality. The comparison underscores the severity of the spiritual condition in Jerusalem and emphasizes that the people’s behavior had reached a level of depravity akin to that of these condemned cities.
