Jeremiah 23:3

Posted on 18 May at 15:01

“3 And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase.”

1. Context and Background: Jeremiah 23:3 is part of a prophecy given by the prophet Jeremiah during a time of great turmoil in the nation of Judah. The people had turned away from God, and their leaders, including the kings and false prophets, were leading them astray. In this chapter, Jeremiah denounces the corrupt leaders and false prophets, while also offering hope and reassurance for the future.

In this verse, God promises to gather the remnant of His people, referring to those who have remained faithful to Him despite the unfaithfulness of the majority. The remnant represents a faithful and repentant group within the larger population. This promise of gathering the remnant echoes God’s faithfulness and His desire to restore and redeem His people.

2. “I will gather the remnant of my flock”: Due to the disobedience and idolatry of the people of Judah, God allowed them to be taken into captivity by foreign nations. This scattering of the people among various countries was a consequence of their rebellion against God’s commands. However, even in the midst of judgment, God assures them that He will not abandon them. He will bring them back to their land.

3. “Out of all countries whither I have driven them”: God promises to bring the scattered remnant of His people back to their own land, the land of Israel. This indicates a future restoration of the nation and a return to their homes. It speaks of God’s mercy and His plan to reunite His people after their period of exile.

4. “Will bring them again to their folds”: God not only promises to gather and restore His people, but He also declares that they will experience blessing and prosperity. The image of being fruitful and increasing suggests a time of growth, abundance, and restoration. It signifies not just physical prosperity but also spiritual revival and the blessings of a renewed relationship with God.

5. “They shall be fruitful and increase”: God reveals God’s faithfulness to His people even in times of judgment and exile. The verse highlights God’s promise to gather the remnant of His faithful people and bring them back to their land. It emphasizes God’s desire to restore and bless His people, both physically and spiritually.
