Jeremiah 23:33

Posted on 18 May at 15:01

“And when this people, or the prophet, or a priest, shall ask thee, saying, What is the burden of the LORD? thou shalt then say unto them, What burden? I will even forsake you, saith the LORD.”

Jeremiah 23:33 is part of a larger passage in which the prophet Jeremiah addresses false prophets who were claiming to speak on behalf of God but were actually misleading the people. The chapter begins with a strong rebuke against these false prophets, highlighting their deceptive practices and the harm they were causing to the people of Israel.

Let’s break down the verse and examine its context to understand its meaning:

“And when this people, or the prophet, or a priest, shall ask thee, saying, What is the burden of the LORD?”: The term “burden of the LORD” refers to a prophetic message or an oracle from God. The false prophets would often claim to have received burdens from God, presenting themselves as the true bearers of divine messages. They would ask Jeremiah about the burden he claimed to have received from the Lord, seeking to discredit him or elevate their own status.

“thou shalt then say unto them, What burden? I will even forsake you, saith the LORD.”: In response to their inquiry, Jeremiah is instructed by God to counter their question with, “What burden?” This statement is not an admission of not having a divine burden but rather a rejection of their false claims. Jeremiah was essentially challenging the validity of their burdens and exposing their deceitful practices.

Furthermore, the verse ends with God’s declaration that He will forsake them. This statement is a severe judgment on the false prophets, priests, and the people who were following them. It signifies that God will withdraw His presence, protection, and guidance from those who perpetuate falsehood and engage in deceptive practices.

Overall, Jeremiah 23:33 serves as a strong rebuke against false prophets who claimed to speak on behalf of God but were actually leading the people astray. It emphasizes the importance of discernment and warns against blindly following those who manipulate and distort the true message of God.

This verse reminds us to be cautious and discerning when evaluating spiritual leaders and their claims. It encourages us to seek the truth directly from God’s Word, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us and protect us from deception.
