Jeremiah 26:20

Listen to this article

“And there was also a man that prophesied in the name of the LORD, Urijah the son of Shemaiah of Kirjath-jearim, who prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah.”

Context:To understand Jeremiah 26:20, we need to consider the surrounding verses and the historical context. In this chapter, Jeremiah is delivering a message of judgment and warning to the people of Judah and Jerusalem because of their disobedience and idolatry. Jeremiah’s prophecies were met with resistance, opposition, and threats from the religious leaders and the people.

Urijah the Prophet:Verse 20 introduces us to Urijah, a prophet who delivered a similar message of judgment against the city and the land. Urijah’s prophecies were aligned with those of Jeremiah. We don’t have much information about Urijah apart from this verse, but he played a significant role in delivering God’s message to the people.

Parallel Prophecies:The mention of Urijah in this verse highlights the parallel nature of his and Jeremiah’s prophecies. Both prophets were warning the people of the impending judgment from the Lord if they did not turn away from their wicked ways and return to God. Their prophecies confirmed each other, lending further weight to the message they proclaimed.

Opposition to the Prophets:Throughout the book of Jeremiah, we see that the people and religious leaders often rejected and opposed the messages of the prophets. They did not want to hear about their sins and the need for repentance. Instead of humbling themselves and seeking God, they chose to persecute and harm the prophets who faithfully spoke the truth.

God’s Judgment:The presence of both Jeremiah and Urijah delivering similar prophecies emphasized the seriousness of God’s impending judgment upon Judah and Jerusalem. God was providing ample opportunity for the people to turn back to Him, but their stubbornness and refusal to heed the warnings would result in severe consequences.

  • Lessons for Today:The story of Jeremiah, Urijah, and their prophecies carries lessons for us today. It reminds us of the importance of heeding God’s warnings and messages, even if they are difficult to hear. It also highlights the reality that delivering God’s message may not always be well-received or appreciated, but faithfulness to God’s truth should be our priority.
