Jeremiah 27:14

Therefore hearken not vnto the words of the prophets, that speake vnto you, saying; Yee shall not serue the king of Babylon: for they prophecie a lie vnto you. Jeremiah 27:14 (KJV)

In this verse Jeremiah, speaking on behalf of God, warns the people of Judah during a critical period when the Babylonian empire under King Nebuchadnezzar threatened invasion and captivity. God had appointed Jeremiah to announce impending judgment for the nation’s sins and to instruct the people to submit to Babylonian rule as part of His sovereign plan. At the same time, false prophets were reassuring the people that they would not have to serve the king of Babylon and that they would be delivered from captivity. Jeremiah therefore commands the people not to listen to these deceptive voices.

The passage teaches several important lessons. First, it highlights the danger of false prophets, a recurring theme throughout Scripture. Such individuals claim divine authority yet deliver messages contrary to God’s will. Believers are urged to be discerning, testing the spirits (1 John 4:1) and comparing every teaching with the truth of God’s Word.

Second, the verse warns of the consequences of ignoring God’s message. Those who chose the comforting lies of the false prophets missed the opportunity to align themselves with God’s guidance and protection, and they faced severe judgment as a result.

Third, the passage underscores the importance of trust and obedience. God’s plan for Judah involved serving the king of Babylon; by submitting, they could avoid further destruction. Trusting in God’s sovereignty and obeying His instructions—even when they conflict with personal desires—is essential for a faithful relationship with Him.

Overall, Jeremiah 27:14 calls believers to discern truth from deception, to trust God’s wisdom, and to align their lives with His will, even when that path runs contrary to personal expectations. It serves as a timeless reminder to seek God’s guidance above all else and to heed His word rather than the alluring lies of false prophets.
