Jeremiah 27:21

Posted on 18 May at 14:00

Yea thus saith the Lord of hostes the God of Israel, concerning the vessels that remaine in the house of the Lord, and in the house of the king of Iudah and of Ierusalem; Jeremiah 27:21 (KJV)

Yea, thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning the vessels that remain in the house of the LORD, and in the house of the king of Judah and of Jerusalem; “As for the vessels that are left in the house of the Lord, and in the house of the king of Judah, and at Jerusalem,” saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel. To understand the significance of Jeremiah 27:21, it is important to consider its surrounding verses and the broader context of the book of Jeremiah. In this chapter Jeremiah delivers a message from God to the people of Judah, warning them of the impending Babylonian invasion and exile. He tells the surrounding kings and nations that they must serve the Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, as God’s appointed ruler.

The Vessels in the House of the Lord: In this verse God addresses the vessels that remain in the house of the Lord, referring to the temple in Jerusalem. These vessels were sacred items used in worship and service, such as cups, bowls, and other utensils. The verse indicates that despite the impending destruction some of these vessels still remain in the temple.

The Vessels in the House of the King of Judah and Jerusalem: The verse also mentions vessels that remain in the house of the king of Judah and Jerusalem, likely referring to the royal palace where valuable items of the king were kept. Their mention suggests they too were at risk because of the impending invasion.

Symbolic Meaning: The vessels serve as a symbol of the nation of Judah and its leaders. Just as the vessels are at risk of being carried away by the Babylonians, so too are the people of Judah at risk of captivity. The vessels illustrate the people’s fate and their need to submit to God’s plan, which includes Babylonian rule.

God’s Sovereignty: Throughout Jeremiah we see the recurring theme of God’s sovereignty over nations and rulers. In this verse God identifies Himself as the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, underscoring His authority over all things, including the temple and palace vessels. By addressing these vessels God reminds the people of Judah that He is ultimately in control and that they should trust His plans even in the face of invasion.

In summary, Jeremiah 27:21 emphasizes God’s warning to the people of Judah and their need to acknowledge the Babylonian rule. The mention of the vessels in the house of the Lord and the house of the king serves as a symbolic reminder of the impending destruction and exile, and it underscores God’s sovereignty over all nations and His call for the people to trust His plans in difficult times.
