Jeremiah 28:15

Posted on 18 May at 15:01
Listen to this article

“Then said the prophet Jeremiah unto Hananiah the prophet, Hear now, Hananiah; The LORD hath not sent thee; but thou makest this people to trust in a lie.”

Context:Understanding the historical context and background of a verse is crucial for its interpretation. In Jeremiah 28, the prophet Hananiah challenges Jeremiah’s prophecy regarding the Babylonian captivity, claiming that the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar would be overthrown within two years and that the exiled vessels of the temple would be returned. Jeremiah responds to Hananiah’s false prophecy in verse 15.

Key Players:The verse involves two prophets: Jeremiah and Hananiah. Jeremiah, the true prophet of God, confronts Hananiah, who is disseminating a false prophecy. This confrontation serves as a test to distinguish between the true prophet and the false prophet.

God’s Authority:Jeremiah asserts that Hananiah has not been sent by the Lord. This highlights the importance of discerning and recognizing God’s true messengers. Hananiah’s message, though optimistic, is a fabrication that misleads the people. It is essential to discern whether someone claiming to speak for God is truly conveying His message.

False Hope:Jeremiah accuses Hananiah of causing the people to trust in a lie. Hananiah’s prophecy offered false hope and comfort, contradicting the true message of impending judgment and exile from God. This emphasizes the danger of false teachings and prophecies that lead people away from the truth, preventing them from repenting and turning back to God.

Spiritual Discernment:This verse reminds us of the importance of spiritual discernment. Believers need to be cautious and discerning when evaluating messages claiming to be from God. We should compare them to the teachings of Scripture and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to distinguish truth from falsehood.

Application:Jeremiah 28:15 encourages us to be vigilant in discerning the messages we encounter, whether from religious leaders, teachers, or even our own thoughts. It calls us to seek God’s truth, examine it against the Scriptures, and rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance. We should be wary of false teachings that offer empty promises and lead us away from a genuine relationship with God.

  • In summary, Jeremiah 28:15 warns against false prophecies and teachings that mislead people and cause them to trust in lies. It reminds us to exercise spiritual discernment and seek God’s truth, relying on His Word and the Holy Spirit to guide us in distinguishing between true and false messages.
