Jeremiah 28:9

Listen to this article

“The prophet which prophesieth of peace, when the word of the prophet shall come to pass, then shall the prophet be known, that the Lord hath truly sent him.”

Context: Jeremiah 28:9 is part of a larger narrative that takes place during a significant period in the history of the Israelites. It occurs in the context of Jeremiah’s ministry, during the reign of King Zedekiah of Judah. At that time, the Israelites were facing political turmoil and the impending invasion of the Babylonian empire.

In this verse, we encounter a confrontation between two prophets: Jeremiah and Hananiah. Hananiah falsely prophesied that within two years, the Lord would break the yoke of Babylon and restore the temple vessels that had been taken away. Jeremiah, however, had been prophesying a different message—that the Babylonian exile would last for seventy years.

Jeremiah 28:9: serves as a test of true prophecy. It states that when a prophet speaks of peace, if their prophecy comes to pass, then it is a confirmation that the Lord has truly sent that prophet. This verse highlights the importance of discerning true prophecy from false prophecy and distinguishing genuine messengers of God from impostors.

In the context of this passage, Jeremiah’s prophecies were consistently aligned with the Lord’s message, which often involved messages of warning and judgment due to the people’s unfaithfulness. Hananiah, on the other hand, proclaimed a message of false hope and immediate deliverance, contradicting Jeremiah’s words. Ultimately, Hananiah’s prophecy did not come to pass, while Jeremiah’s prophecy regarding the Babylonian exile was fulfilled.

This verse teaches us that the fulfilment of a prophet’s words serves as evidence of their divine calling. It underscores the importance of carefully evaluating and discerning prophetic messages, measuring them against the consistent revelation and character of God.

Overall, Jeremiah 28:9 encourages believers to seek wisdom, discernment, and patience when evaluating prophetic words and teachings, always measuring them against the truth revealed in God’s Word. It reminds us to be cautious of false prophets who may offer easy and appealing messages, but ultimately lead people astray from the path of truth and obedience to God.
