Jeremiah 31:28

Listen to this article

“And it shall come to pass, that as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict; so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, saith the Lord.”

Historical Context:Jeremiah was an Old Testament prophet who delivered messages from God to the people of Judah. This particular verse comes from the Book of Jeremiah, which contains prophecies regarding the judgment and restoration of Judah.

In the preceding verses of Jeremiah 31, God declares that He will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and Judah (Jeremiah 31:31-34). However, before the restoration can occur, God emphasizes the discipline and judgment He has brought upon His people. The verse you mentioned reflects God’s actions of “plucking up, breaking down, throwing down, destroying, and afflicting” Judah due to their disobedience and idolatry.

God’s Faithfulness:Despite the judgment and discipline, God assures His people of His continued faithfulness. He declares that just as He watched over them to bring destruction and affliction, He will also watch over them to bring restoration and blessing. The phrases “to build” and “to plant” signify the rebuilding and restoration of Judah after their time of exile.

Divine Purpose:This verse highlights an important aspect of God’s character-His sovereign control over the affairs of nations. God uses various means, including judgment and discipline, to accomplish His purposes. In the case of Judah, the discipline served as a corrective measure to turn them back to God and ultimately lead to their restoration.

  • God’s Judgment and Discipline:

Though this verse speaks specifically to the people of Judah, there are spiritual lessons that we can apply to our lives today. It reminds us that God’s discipline is not an act of cruelty but an expression of His love and desire for our spiritual growth. Just as He disciplines those He loves (Hebrews 12:6), He also promises to restore and rebuild us when we repent and turn back to Him.

  • Spiritual Application:

In summary, Jeremiah 31:28 in the KJV emphasizes God’s discipline and judgment upon Judah for their disobedience, but it also underscores His faithfulness and commitment to rebuild and restore them. This verse serves as a reminder of God’s sovereign control and His desire to discipline us for our growth and bring about restoration in our lives.
