Jeremiah 32:40

Listen to this article

“And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.”

Jeremiah 32:40 (KJV) says: “And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.”

Historical Context:Jeremiah was a prophet during a tumultuous time in Israel’s history. He prophesied during the decline and fall of the southern kingdom of Judah, which was facing impending destruction at the hands of the Babylonians. In the midst of this challenging period, Jeremiah received messages from God to proclaim to the people.

  • Covenant with God:

In this verse, God promises to make an everlasting covenant with His people. Throughout the Bible, God establishes various covenants with His chosen people, demonstrating His faithfulness and desire to bless and guide them. The covenant mentioned here signifies God’s commitment to His people and His intention to act in their best interest.

Unwavering Goodness:God declares that He will not turn away from His people but will continue to do them good. This assurance reflects God’s steadfast love and His desire to provide for and bless His children. Even in times of difficulty and discipline, God’s ultimate intention is to work for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).

Fear of God:The verse also mentions that God will put His fear in the hearts of His people so that they will not depart from Him. The fear of God is not about being scared or terrified of Him but rather a reverential awe, respect, and recognition of His authority. This fear leads to obedience and a desire to remain in a right relationship with Him.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s Covenant:As believers, we are part of the new covenant through Jesus Christ (Hebrews 9:15). We can trust that God’s covenant with us is everlasting, and He will always be faithful to His promises. We can rely on His goodness, knowing that He works for our benefit.
  • Fear of God:Cultivating a healthy fear of God helps us stay on the right path and avoid departing from Him. It reminds us of His holiness and prompts us to honour and obey Him in all areas of our lives.
  • Assurance and Security:God’s promise of an everlasting covenant assures us of His unchanging love and care for us. Even in difficult times, we can find comfort in knowing that He will never abandon us but will continue to work for our good.
  • Seeking a Right Relationship:Reflect on your own relationship with God. Are there areas where you have departed from Him? Allow the fear of God to draw you back into a close and obedient relationship with Him. Seek to align your heart and actions with His will.

Remember to read the surrounding verses and consider the broader context of Jeremiah’s message to gain a deeper understanding of God’s words to His people.
