Jeremiah 36:9
And it came to passe in the fifth yeere of Iehoiakim the sonne of Iosiah king of Iudah, in the ninth moneth, that they proclaimed a fast before the Lord to all the people in Ierusalem, & to all the people that came from the cities of Iudah vnto Ierusalem. Jeremiah 36:9 (KJV)
And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth month,
that they proclaimed a fast before the LORD to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem. Jeremiah 36:9 (KJV)
Jeremiah was a prophet of God who lived during a tumultuous period in Judah’s history. He prophesied during the reigns of several kings of Judah, including Josiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah. His ministry lasted for over forty years, and he consistently delivered God’s messages to the people, warning them of impending judgment because of their disobedience.
In Jeremiah 36:9 the verse records a specific event that took place in the fifth year of King Jehoiakim’s reign, during the ninth month. The people of Jerusalem, together with those who had come from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem, proclaimed a fast before the Lord.
A fast was a spiritual practice in which individuals or a community abstained from food and sometimes other activities for a designated period. Fasting was often undertaken to seek God’s guidance, to express repentance, or to invoke divine intervention in times of crisis, and it could also serve as an act of devotion.
The fact that the people proclaimed a fast indicates that they recognized the seriousness of their situation and desired God’s favor and intervention. They acknowledged their need for repentance and sought the Lord’s guidance amid the challenges they were facing.
This verse is part of the larger narrative found in Jeremiah 36. Earlier, God instructed Jeremiah to write down all the prophecies he had received on a scroll. The purpose of that scroll was to bring God’s warning and judgment to the people of Judah. The proclamation of a fast and the reading of the scroll in the temple were integral to the process of conveying God’s message to the nation.
The fast mentioned in Jeremiah 36:9 serves as a reminder that even in times of crisis or impending judgment, God’s people should turn to Him with repentant hearts, seeking His guidance and mercy. Fasting can be a powerful spiritual discipline that demonstrates humility, dependence on God, and a sincere desire for His intervention.
Thus, the passage encourages believers today to approach God with sincerity and humility, seeking His will and guidance in times of trouble, just as the people of Judah did when they proclaimed a fast before the Lord.
