Jeremiah 38:24

Listen to this article

“Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.”

Context: The book of Jeremiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. It records the messages of the prophet Jeremiah to the people of Judah, warning them of the impending judgment of God due to their disobedience and idolatry. In Jeremiah 38, Jeremiah is imprisoned for prophesying the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians.

The Setting: King Zedekiah was the last king of Judah before the Babylonian captivity. He was placed on the throne by Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon. In this particular passage, Jeremiah is summoned by King Zedekiah to have a private conversation.

Zedekiah’s Request: Zedekiah, feeling the weight of Jeremiah’s words and fearing for his own life, asks Jeremiah to keep their conversation confidential. He wants to prevent the princes or officials from knowing about their discussion, as they were hostile to Jeremiah and his prophecies. Zedekiah hopes that by keeping the conversation secret, Jeremiah’s life will be spared.

Zedekiah’s Dilemma: Zedekiah is torn between his respect for Jeremiah as a prophet and his fear of the consequences that might arise from accepting Jeremiah’s prophecies. The king understands that Jeremiah’s words are divinely inspired, yet he lacks the courage to act upon them. He is hesitant to confront his officials and take the necessary steps to avert the judgment of God.

Lessons from Jeremiah 38:24:

  • Fear and indecision can hinder obedience: Zedekiah’s fear of his officials prevents him from openly embracing Jeremiah’s message and acting upon it. Similarly, when we allow fear or indecision to rule our hearts, we may struggle to follow God’s instructions and miss out on His blessings.
  • The importance of seeking godly counsel: Zedekiah consults with Jeremiah, recognizing him as a prophet of God. Seeking wise and godly counsel can provide valuable guidance and help us make sound decisions in difficult situations.
  • The consequences of ignoring God’s warnings: Zedekiah’s hesitation to heed Jeremiah’s words leads to the destruction of Jerusalem and his own downfall. Disregarding God’s warnings and refusing to repent can result in dire consequences.
  • The need for boldness and faith: Zedekiah’s request for secrecy reveals his lack of faith and courage. We are called to trust in God’s promises and step out in faith, even when faced with challenging circumstances or opposition.

Jeremiah 38:24 serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience, trust, and seeking God’s guidance in times of difficulty. It also highlights the consequences of ignoring God’s warnings and the need for boldness to follow His will.
