Jeremiah 38:26

Then thou shalt say vnto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to returne to Ionathans house to die there. Jeremiah 38:26 (KJV)

Jeremiah 38 records the prophet’s experience during the reign of King Zedekiah in Judah. Jeremiah faithfully delivered God’s messages of judgment and warning, urging the people to repent and return to the Lord. His words, however, provoked opposition; officials accused him of discouraging the nation and weakening morale. As a result, Jeremiah was thrown into a cistern and left to die.

In the midst of this crisis an Ethiopian eunuch named Ebed‑Melech intervened. Recognising the injustice, he appealed to the king on Jeremiah’s behalf, asking that the prophet not be sent back to the house of Jonathan, where death awaited him. The king’s officials later deliberated how to punish Jeremiah, but Ebed‑Melech’s intercession led to the prophet’s rescue. Afterward King Zedekiah summoned Jeremiah secretly, and when the princes questioned the prophet about their conversation, Jeremiah responded with the quoted verse.

The passage highlights several key themes. First, God’s providence is evident as He orchestrated events that brought an unexpected rescuer into Jeremiah’s life. Even in the darkest moments, God remains in control and can use unlikely means to deliver His servants.

Second, the verse underscores God’s faithfulness. Throughout the book of Jeremiah, the Lord preserves the prophet despite threats and danger, answering his prayer for deliverance and demonstrating that He hears the cries of faithful servants and acts according to His perfect timing.

Third, the power of intercession is displayed through Ebed‑Melech’s advocacy. His willingness to stand for the oppressed and plead before the king resulted in Jeremiah’s salvation, reminding believers of the importance of intercessory prayer and bold advocacy for those who suffer.
