Jeremiah 40:3
Now the Lord hath brought it, and done according as he hath sayd: because yee haue sinned against the Lord, and haue not obeyed his voyce, therefore this thing is come vpon you. Jeremiah 40:3 (KJV)
Jeremiah was a prophet during a tumultuous period in Israel’s history. The people repeatedly disobeyed God’s commands, which led to the Babylonian invasion and the destruction of Jerusalem. Jeremiah had warned them of the coming consequences, but they refused to listen.
Jeremiah 40:3 occurs after the Babylonian conquest when Nebuzaradan, the captain of the Babylonian army, released Jeremiah from captivity and addressed him directly. In the broader context, Nebuzaradan had appointed Gedaliah as governor over the remnant left in the land of Judah—those poorest people who were not taken into exile (cf. Jeremiah 42:13‑14). The verse records Nebuzaradan’s declaration to Jeremiah.
The verse acknowledges that the Lord, in His sovereignty, has brought about the events exactly as He had said. It emphasizes that God’s judgment and the exile came upon the people precisely because they had sinned against the Lord and had not obeyed His voice. This underscores the principle of cause and effect: disobedience to God’s commands leads to negative consequences.
The passage serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness to His word. Even though the people were disobedient, God fulfilled His promised judgments, demonstrating that His word is trustworthy and His judgments are just. For contemporary readers, the verse warns us to heed God’s voice, repent of sin, and live in obedience to Him, recognizing that our actions have both individual and collective consequences. It calls us to reflect on our own obedience and the outcomes that may arise from disobedience, urging a life aligned with God’s will.
