Jeremiah 43:13
He shall breake also the images of Beth-shemesh that is in the land of Egypt, and the houses of the gods of the Egyptians shall he burne with fire. Jeremiah 43:13 (KJV)
This verse is part of the prophecies given by Jeremiah concerning the judgment and punishment of Egypt. To grasp its significance, we must first recall the context of Jeremiah 43. After the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians, a remnant of Judah fled to Egypt seeking refuge. Jeremiah had repeatedly warned them to remain in Judah and submit to Babylonian rule, emphasizing that reliance on Egypt for safety was futile.
Jeremiah foretold that the Babylonian king would bring judgment upon Egypt, though the text does not specifically name Nebuchadnezzar or state that he would come to Egypt. Verse 13 focuses on the idols and false gods of the Egyptians. It speaks of the breaking of the images of Beth‑shemesh, which were located in Egypt; Beth‑shemesh itself is not an Egyptian sun‑worship site. The breaking of these images and the burning of the houses of the Egyptian gods symbolize the total destruction of the Egyptian religious system by the Lord’s power.
The passage highlights God’s sovereignty over all nations and His ability to render false gods powerless. It serves as a stark warning to the Judahite remnant in Egypt that their trust in a foreign power and its idols will not protect them. The futility of worshiping idols is underscored: those false gods will be shattered and their temples consumed by fire.
From a broader perspective, the verse reminds believers today that the true God alone is worthy of worship. It calls us to place our confidence in the Lord rather than in worldly powers or man‑made idols. God’s judgment will come upon all who reject Him and cling to false deities.
In conclusion, Jeremiah 43:13 prophesies the divine judgment against the false gods and idols of Egypt, affirming God’s supreme authority and warning against reliance on any power apart from Him. As believers, we are urged to heed this warning, trust wholly in the one true God, and reject the allure of any false worship.
