Jeremiah 43:4
So Iohanan the sonne of Kareah, and all the captaines of the forces, and all the people, obeied not the voice of the Lord, to dwell in the land of Iudah. Jeremiah 43:4 (KJV)
Context: To understand the significance of Jeremiah 43:4, it is important to consider its context. Prior to this verse, the people of Judah were reacting to the aftermath of the Babylonian conquest. The Babylonian army had already conquered Jerusalem, destroyed the temple, and taken many people captive. Amid this crisis, Jeremiah, as a prophet of God, delivered a message urging the people to remain in the land of Judah and trust in God’s protection.
Disobedience to God’s Voice: The verse states that Johanan the son of Kareah, along with the captains of the forces and all the people, did not obey the voice of the LORD to stay in the land of Judah. Instead, they decided to flee to Egypt out of fear of the Babylonians.
Lack of Trust in God: Their disobedience revealed a lack of trust in God. Despite God’s promises of protection and deliverance, they chose to rely on their own understanding and seek security in Egypt. This failure to recognize God’s sovereignty and His ability to fulfill His promises showed a deficiency of faith.
Consequences of Disobedience: Jeremiah had warned that if they went to Egypt they would face destruction and judgment from God. Their refusal to heed this warning led to dire consequences. In the following verses Jeremiah prophesies the judgment that would come upon those who sought refuge in Egypt, including the Babylonian invasion of Egypt.
Application: Jeremiah 43:4 therefore emphasizes the importance of obedience and trust in God’s voice. It warns against relying on human wisdom and teaches the need to seek God’s guidance in all aspects of life.
