Jeremiah 46:17

Listen to this article

They did crie there, Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise, he hath passed the time appointed. Jeremiah 46:17 (KJV)

This verse is part of a larger prophecy found in Jeremiah 46:2‑28, known as the oracle against Egypt. In this prophecy, Jeremiah declares the impending judgment and destruction that will come upon Egypt and its Pharaoh. In verse 17 we see a proclamation concerning Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. The people cry out, declaring that Pharaoh is nothing more than a noise or a loud sound. The phrase “he hath passed the appointed time” suggests that Pharaoh’s reign and influence have come to an end. This verse reflects the overarching message of God’s judgment against Egypt. It is a declaration that the powerful ruler who once instilled fear and commanded respect will be rendered insignificant and impotent. The prophecy speaks of the downfall and defeat of Pharaoh, highlighting the limited power of human rulers in the face of God’s divine purposes. From a broader perspective, this verse can also serve as a reminder of the transient nature of human power and the ultimate sovereignty of God. It emphasizes that no matter how great or influential a person may appear, their power and authority are subject to God’s divine will and can be brought to an end at any appointed time. The broader message of Jeremiah 46 remains a declaration of God’s judgment against Egypt, emphasizing that even powerful nations are subject to divine purpose. As we reflect on this verse, it reminds us to place our trust and hope in God rather than in the fleeting power and authority of human leaders. It encourages us to recognise the supremacy of God and His ultimate control over all nations and rulers. Overall, Jeremiah 46:17 serves as a reminder of God’s judgment against the proud and powerful, highlighting the transient nature of human authority and the enduring sovereignty of God.
