Jeremiah 47:7
“The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Philistines, before that Pharaoh smote Gaza.”
Historical Context: Jeremiah 47:7 is part of a prophecy given by the prophet Jeremiah concerning the Philistines, who were the ancient inhabitants of the land of Philistia, located along the Mediterranean coast, in what is modern-day Israel and Palestine. The prophecy was given prior to the attack on Gaza by Pharaoh Neco of Egypt.
The Word of the LORD: The verse begins by stating that “the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet.” This phrase emphasises that the following message is not Jeremiah’s own words but a divine revelation from God. As a prophet, Jeremiah served as a mediator between God and the people, delivering God’s messages and warnings.
Judgment against the Philistines: The prophecy is directed specifically against the Philistines, a long‑standing enemy of Israel. The Philistines were known for their continual hostility and conflict with the Israelites throughout the Old Testament. This prophecy reveals God’s intention to bring judgment upon them for their actions.
Pharaoh smote Gaza: The verse concludes by mentioning that Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt at that time, would strike or attack the city of Gaza. Gaza was a major Philistine city and an important hub for trade and military operations. This event served as a fulfilment of the judgment pronounced against the Philistines.
