Jeremiah 48:42
“And Moab shall be destroyed from being a people, because he hath magnified himself against the LORD.”
Jeremiah 48: is a chapter in the Book of Jeremiah that contains a prophecy against the nation of Moab. In this chapter, the prophet Jeremiah delivers a message from the Lord, foretelling the destruction and judgment that will come upon Moab due to their rebellion against God.
In Jeremiah 48:42, the focus is on Moab’s fate as a consequence of their pride and defiance towards the Lord. Moab was a neighbouring nation to Israel and had a long history of conflict and strained relations with God’s chosen people.
The phrase "he hath magnified himself against the LORD" refers to Moab’s arrogant and haughty attitude towards God. Moab exalted themselves and showed no reverence or respect for the Lord, disregarding His commandments and choosing to follow their own desires and idols instead.
As a result of their pride and rebellion, God declares that Moab will be destroyed "from being a people." This phrase indicates a severe judgment upon Moab, suggesting that their nation would be utterly devastated and their existence as a distinct people would come to an end. This pronouncement emphasises the consequences of opposing God and highlights the importance of humbling oneself before Him.
