Jeremiah 48:7
“For because thou hast trusted in thy works and in thy treasures, thou shalt also be taken: and Chemosh shall go forth into captivity with his priests and his princes together.”
Context: The book of Jeremiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. It contains the prophecies and messages of the prophet Jeremiah to the people of Judah and surrounding nations during a time of impending judgment and exile. In chapter 48, Jeremiah delivers a message of judgment against Moab, a neighboring nation.
Trust in works and treasures: In Jeremiah 48:7, the Lord pronounces judgment upon Moab for their misplaced trust. The Moabites had put their confidence in their own works and treasures, relying on their own strength and wealth instead of turning to the Lord. This is a recurring theme throughout the Bible where God emphasizes the importance of trusting in Him alone and not in worldly possessions or self-righteousness.
Consequences of misplaced trust: The verse continues by stating that because Moab trusted in their own works and treasures, they would be taken captive. This implies that their misplaced trust would lead to their downfall and defeat. The enemy nation would conquer them, leading to their captivity.
Chemosh and captivity: Chemosh was the primary god of the Moabites. The verse mentions that Chemosh, along with his priests and princes, would also be taken into captivity. This highlights the futility of trusting in false gods and idols. Despite their worship and devotion to Chemosh, he would not be able to protect or deliver them in their time of need.
