As in the ouerthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the Lord: no man shall abide there, neither shall a sonne of man dwell in it. Jeremiah 49:18 (KJV)

Context: The book of Jeremiah contains prophecies concerning various nations. In Jeremiah 49 the focus includes judgments against multiple nations, including Edom. This verse specifically refers to the destruction of Edom’s cities.

Historical Background: The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah are mentioned here as examples of complete devastation and desolation. These cities were notorious for their wickedness and immorality, and God’s judgment fell upon them in the form of fire and brimstone (Genesis 19:24‑25).

God’s Judgment: The language used in Jeremiah 49:18 emphasizes the severity of God’s judgment. The phrase “no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it” signifies complete desolation. This conveys that Edom’s cities would be utterly destroyed and left desolate and uninhabited.

Consequences of Sin: Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of their extreme wickedness and refusal to turn away from their sinful ways. Similarly, Edom was also facing God’s judgment due to its pride and hostility toward God’s people. This verse underscores the principle that unrepentant sin carries severe consequences.

Call to Repentance: The mention of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah serves as a call to Edom to repent and turn back to God. It serves as a reminder that judgment can be averted if they choose to abandon their sinful practices and seek the Lord’s mercy.

Application: For us today, Jeremiah 49:18 reminds us of the seriousness of sin and the importance of repentance. It underscores the fact that God is just and will not tolerate persistent unrighteousness. It also serves as a reminder of the need to heed God’s warnings and turn away from sinful behaviours.
