Jeremiah 49:39

But it shall come to passe in the later daies, that I wil bring againe the captiuitie of Elam, saith the Lord. Jeremiah 49:39 (KJV)

This study examines Jeremiah 49:39, a prophetic declaration concerning the nation of Elam. The book of Jeremiah contains a series of oracles directed toward various surrounding peoples, and chapters 46‑51 specifically address the coming judgment on several nations, including Elam.

Elam was an ancient kingdom situated in what is now southwestern Iran. In Jeremiah’s day it was recognized for its military strength and influence. Historically the nation had already suffered defeat at the hands of the Assyrian Empire and later other powers, experiences that shaped its reputation as a conquered people.

The phrase “in the latter days” points to a future period beyond the prophet’s own era. Scripture often uses this expression to denote the eschatological age, a time when God’s ultimate purposes for the world will be brought to completion.

The core of the prophecy declares that the Lord “will bring again the captivity of Elam.” This language suggests a reversal of Elam’s earlier subjugation. Some readers understand the wording as indicating a future restoration—bringing the people back from exile—while others see it as foretelling a renewed judgment that will once more place Elam in captivity. Both nuances are present in the biblical text.

Regarding fulfillment, Elam did experience further conquests by successive empires such as Babylon and Persia, yet the specific future event spoken of in Jeremiah has not been fully realized. The prophecy remains awaiting its ultimate consummation in the latter days.

From a spiritual perspective, the verse underscores God’s sovereignty over all nations. It reminds believers that divine justice ultimately prevails and that no nation can escape accountability before the Almighty.

Jeremiah’s oracles also serve as a testimony to the reliability of God’s word. Even when a particular promise appears unfulfilled in the present age, the faithful can trust that God will bring it to pass in His perfect timing.

In conclusion, Jeremiah 49:39 points to a future turning point for Elam—whether as restoration or renewed captivity—while simultaneously affirming God’s supreme authority, faithfulness, and the certainty that His prophetic declarations will be accomplished.
