The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands waxed feeble; anguish tooke hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in trauell. Jeremiah 50:43 (KJV)

The book of Jeremiah contains prophecies against various nations, including Babylon. In chapters 50‑51 the focus is on the judgment against Babylon. God, through Jeremiah, declares that Babylon will be destroyed for its sins and the harm it has caused to God’s people.

The king of Babylon mentioned here is likely a reference to the last rulers of Babylon, such as Nabonidus (with Belshazzar serving as co‑regent) or Belshazzar himself, according to historical accounts. The mention of the king’s reaction emphasizes the imminent fall and the loss of power and control.

“Hearing the report” suggests that the king receives news about the approaching armies or the impending destruction of Babylon. This report brings a realization of the king’s vulnerability and the impending doom that awaits his kingdom.

The phrase “his hands waxed feeble” portrays the king’s physical weakness and loss of strength. It symbolizes his inability to resist or overcome the approaching forces. The once mighty and powerful ruler is now reduced to a state of helplessness and despair.

The verse continues, stating that “anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail.” This vivid imagery describes the king’s intense emotional and physical distress. The reference to “pangs as of a woman in travail” signifies the severity of his anguish, comparable to the pain experienced during childbirth, and underscores the inevitability of his suffering.

Overall, Jeremiah 50:43 portrays the emotional and physical distress of the Babylonian king upon hearing the report of the impending destruction of his kingdom. It highlights the swift and inevitable judgment of God upon a nation that had oppressed His people, serving as a reminder of God’s sovereignty and justice. Believers are encouraged to trust that God’s justice will ultimately prevail, even when powerful forces seem unassailable, and to remain steadfast in faith amid trials, knowing that divine judgment is certain and righteous.
