Jeremiah 51:18
“They are vanity, the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.”
This verse is part of the prophecy of the downfall of Babylon found in Jeremiah chapter 51. To fully understand the verse, it’s helpful to provide some context.
In this chapter, Jeremiah speaks on behalf of the Lord, pronouncing judgment against Babylon, a powerful nation that had oppressed Israel. The chapter is a warning to the Babylonians, foretelling their eventual destruction for their wickedness and their oppression of God’s people. It also serves as a message of hope and reassurance for the Israelites who were living in Babylonian exile at the time.
Now let’s examine Jeremiah 51:18 more closely. The verse begins by describing Babylon as “vanity, the work of errors.” This indicates that Babylon’s power, wealth, and achievements are ultimately empty and futile in the eyes of God. Despite their grandeur and dominance, Babylon is regarded as temporary and fleeting.
The phrase “in the time of their visitation they shall perish” refers to the appointed time of judgment and retribution that God has determined for Babylon. The word “visitation” in this context carries the connotation of divine intervention or oversight. It signifies a moment when God would hold Babylon accountable for its actions and bring about its downfall.
This verse serves as a reminder that no matter how mighty or prosperous a nation or empire may seem, if it acts in wickedness and opposes God’s will, it will eventually face divine judgment and perish. It emphasises the sovereignty of God and His authority over the affairs of nations.
For the Israelites who were in exile, this verse would have been a source of comfort and encouragement, assuring them that Babylon’s oppressive reign would come to an end and they would be delivered from captivity.
