Jeremiah 52:16

Listen to this article

“16 But Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left certain of the poor of the land for vinedressers and for husbandmen.”

Context:Jeremiah 52:16 is found in the final chapter of the book of Jeremiah, which recounts the fall of Jerusalem and the subsequent exile of the Israelites to Babylon.

This chapter provides a summary of the events leading up to the fall of Jerusalem, the destruction of the temple, and the exile of the people.

In this verse, Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard serving under King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, is mentioned. After the capture of Jerusalem, Nebuzaradan was responsible for overseeing the destruction of the city and the exile of the Israelites.

The verse states that Nebuzaradan “left certain of the poor of the land for vinedressers and for husbandmen.” This means that Nebuzaradan allowed some of the poor and lowly individuals who remained in Jerusalem to continue working in the vineyards and fields as vinedressers and farmers.

From a historical perspective, this verse highlights the practice of the Babylonians to leave behind a remnant of the conquered people to continue working the land and maintain productivity.

This strategy allowed Babylon to exert control over the region and benefit from the agricultural resources of the land.
