“Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for cunning women, that they may come”

Context:The book of Jeremiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, written by the prophet Jeremiah. Jeremiah was called by God to be a prophet to the nation of Judah during a time of great apostasy and impending judgment. The book contains messages of warning, judgment, and hope.

Historical Background:At the time this verse was written, the people of Judah had turned away from God and were engaged in idolatry and various sinful practices. God, through the prophet Jeremiah, was warning the people about the impending judgment and destruction that would come upon them because of their disobedience.

"Thus saith the LORD of hosts":This phrase indicates that the words that follow are a direct message from God. Jeremiah was speaking on behalf of God, delivering His message to the people.

"Consider ye":This phrase calls for the attention and reflection of the people. God urges them to carefully consider the impending judgment and the seriousness of their situation. It is an invitation to self-reflection and introspection.

"Call for the mourning women":In the ancient Near East, it was customary to hire professional mourners to lament and mourn at funerals or during times of great tragedy. In this context, God instructs the people to call for mourning women, emphasizing the magnitude of the calamity that would befall them.

"Send for cunning women":The phrase "cunning women" refers to skilled and wise women. In this context, they are called to come and express their lamentation and sorrow. These women were known for their ability to articulate grief and convey the seriousness of the situation.

Spiritual Significance:This verse highlights God’s desire for His people to recognize the severity of their sin and the impending judgment that awaits them. God wants them to mourn and express sorrow over their rebellion and turn back to Him in repentance. The call for mourning women and cunning women reflects the gravity of the situation and the need for genuine repentance.

  • Application:As believers today, Jeremiah 9:17 reminds us of the seriousness of sin and the importance of genuine repentance. It calls us to reflect on our own lives and consider whether we are living in alignment with God’s will. If we find areas of disobedience or rebellion, we should mourn over our sins, seek God’s forgiveness, and turn back to Him in genuine repentance.
