For it increaseth: thou huntest me as a fierce Lion: and againe thou shewest thy selfe marueilous vpon me. Job 10:16 (KJV)

The book of Job is a profound exploration of human suffering and the question of why the righteous suffer. Job, described in Job 1:1 (KJV) as a perfect and upright man, undergoes immense hardship and loss. In this verse he expresses his deep distress and sense of God’s relentless pursuit.

“For it increaseth” signals that Job’s afflictions are multiplying. Despite his innocence, he feels overwhelmed by an intensifying series of troubles. “Thou huntest me as a fierce lion” uses a vivid metaphor to portray God’s treatment of him as that of a predator pursuing its prey, illustrating Job’s perception of a relentless attack. “And again thou shewest thyself marvellous upon me” acknowledges that, even amid his suffering, God continues to reveal His extraordinary power and majesty. Job recognizes that God’s actions are astonishing and beyond human comprehension.

Key takeaways: the verse reflects Job’s deep anguish and feeling of being hunted down by God; his suffering seems to increase, heightening his distress and despair; yet he repeatedly acknowledges that God’s ways are marvelous and beyond human understanding. Even in his lament, Job affirms God’s sovereignty and divine majesty.

Application: Job’s words remind us that hardship can make us feel as if we are being pursued by overwhelming challenges. It is natural to question why we endure such trials, but we are called to remember that God’s ways are beyond our understanding. In times of distress we can seek solace in acknowledging God’s sovereignty, trusting that He is working out His purposes even when we cannot comprehend them fully. This verse encourages us to maintain faith and reverence for God, to rely on His strength and wisdom, and to find comfort in knowing that He is still at work, displaying His power in ways we may not expect.
