Job 2:7

Listen to this article

“So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.”

This verse follows the account of Job’s initial afflictions. In the preceding verses, we learn that Job had already lost his livestock, servants, and all of his children. Despite these tragic events, Job remained faithful and did not sin against God.

In Job 2:7, we see Satan being permitted to inflict physical suffering upon Job. Satan “smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.” This description conveys the severity and extent of Job’s affliction. Boils are painful, inflammatory skin lesions that can cause immense discomfort.

This verse raises several significant points for our Bible study:

Satan’s Role:The verse highlights Satan’s involvement in Job’s suffering. Satan is portrayed as the adversary who seeks to test Job’s faithfulness. This passage reveals that Satan was allowed by God to afflict Job physically, within certain limits. It shows that Satan’s power is limited and subject to God’s control.

The Sovereignty of God:Despite allowing Satan to bring affliction upon Job, God remains sovereign. It is crucial to note that Satan cannot act without God’s permission. This concept emphasizes God’s ultimate authority over all events, including human suffering. It reminds us that God can bring good even out of difficult circumstances.

Human Suffering:Job’s physical affliction with painful boils illustrates the reality of human suffering. The Bible does not shy away from acknowledging the existence of suffering in the world. Job’s experience serves as a profound example of enduring trials, while maintaining faith in God.

Job’s Faithfulness:Job’s response to his affliction is remarkable. Despite losing his possessions and now enduring physical pain, he remains faithful and does not sin against God. This demonstrates Job’s unwavering trust in God, even in the face of unimaginable suffering.

As we reflect on Job 2:7, we are reminded of the importance of trusting in God’s sovereignty, even during times of suffering and adversity. Job’s story teaches us valuable lessons about remaining steadfast in faith and not allowing our circumstances to dictate our relationship with God. It encourages us to persevere and maintain hope, knowing that God’s purposes extend far beyond our present struggles.
