Job 22:28

Listen to this article

“Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.”

Job 22:28 is a part of a response given by Eliphaz the Temanite to Job during their conversation.

Eliphaz was one of Job’s friends who attempted to offer an explanation for the suffering Job was experiencing.

This verse contains valuable insights and principles that we can apply to our lives. Let’s break it down into two main parts: Decreeing and establishment: “Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee.” In this portion, Eliphaz emphasizes the power of spoken words and their impact.

The word “decree” refers to making a formal and authoritative order or decision. It implies that through our words, we have the ability to shape our reality. This doesn’t imply a guarantee that everything we speak will come to pass, but rather highlights the influence of our words and the importance of aligning them with God’s will.

This principle finds support in other biblical passages. Proverbs 18:21 (KJV) says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”

Jesus also emphasized the power of faith‑filled words in Mark 11:23 (KJV), saying, “For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.”

The light shining upon your ways: “And the light shall shine upon thy ways.” This part of the verse speaks of the blessings and guidance that come from aligning with God’s will and speaking in accordance with His truth.

When we walk in obedience to God and follow His principles, He illuminates our paths and provides clarity, wisdom, and favor. The light represents divine guidance, understanding, and enlightenment that leads to a prosperous and fulfilling life.

Psalm 119:105 (KJV) beautifully expresses this idea: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

When we make God’s Word the foundation of our lives and align our speech and actions with His truth, we can trust that He will lead us on the right path.

In summary, Job 22:28 teaches us about the power of our words and their impact on our lives. It encourages us to align our speech with God’s truth and to speak in accordance with His will. By doing so, we can experience the blessings of divine guidance, illumination, and favor on our journey of faith.
