Job 29:4

Posted on 18 May at 14:14
Listen to this article

“As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle.”

Context:The book of Job is a profound and poetic exploration of the problem of human suffering. Job, a righteous and upright man, goes through extreme trials and losses, including the loss of his possessions, children, and even his own health. In this verse, Job reflects on his past, remembering a time when he experienced a close relationship with God.

Job’s Youth:Job begins by reminiscing about the days of his youth, a time in his life when he enjoyed a sense of favour and blessing from God. He contrasts this with his present state of suffering and turmoil. This verse gives us a glimpse into Job’s longing for the restoration of his former days.

The Secret of God:Job mentions that the secret of God was upon his tabernacle. This phrase can be understood in different ways. It could refer to the intimate communion Job had with God in his earlier years, where he felt God’s presence and guidance in his life. It could also imply that God had entrusted Job with divine wisdom or insight, enabling him to discern God’s will and purpose.

Application:Job’s reflection on his past serves as a reminder to us that life’s circumstances can change drastically. We may experience seasons of prosperity and closeness to God, but we may also go through seasons of hardship and spiritual dryness. However, we can take comfort in knowing that our experiences with God in the past can sustain us and provide hope during challenging times.

Seeking God’s Presence:Job’s desire to experience the secret of God once again can inspire us to seek a deeper relationship with God. We should long to know Him intimately and experience His guidance and presence in our lives. This can be accomplished through prayer, studying His Word, and cultivating a heart of worship.

Trusting God’s Timing:While Job longs for the restoration of his former days, it is important to note that God’s timing is often different from ours. Job’s journey of suffering ultimately leads to a deeper understanding of God’s sovereignty and a profound encounter with Him. We can learn from Job’s example and trust in God’s perfect timing, even when we are in the midst of difficult circumstances.

In conclusion, Job 29:4 offers us a glimpse into Job’s longing for the restoration of his former days and a closer relationship with God. It reminds us to seek God’s presence, trust in His timing, and find comfort in the memories of our past experiences with Him.
