Job 32:13
“Lest ye should say, We have found out wisdom: God thrusteth him down, not man.”
Context:This verse is part of the dialogue in the Book of Job, specifically in the section where Job’s friends Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar have been speaking to him. However, a young man named Elihu has been patiently listening to their arguments, waiting for his turn to speak.
Job 32 begins with Elihu’s introduction, explaining why he has remained silent until now. In Job 32:13, Elihu expresses his perspective on why he has kept quiet during the discussion. It implies that he has withheld his opinion because he didn’t want others to assume they had discovered all wisdom. Elihu recognizes that human wisdom can be limited and flawed. He acknowledges that true wisdom comes from God.
The phrase “God thrusteth him down, not man” can be interpreted in a couple of ways.
One interpretation is that when someone becomes too confident in their own wisdom or assumes they have all the answers, God humbles them and brings them down. This implies that human wisdom is fallible and insufficient compared to God’s wisdom.
Another interpretation is that when someone is facing difficult circumstances, especially as Job was, it is not other people who bring them down but rather God who allows or permits their suffering. It suggests that human attempts to explain Job’s suffering may fall short, and only God’s divine purpose can truly account for it.
In the broader context of the Book of Job, these verses serve to highlight the importance of humility before God and the recognition that human understanding is limited. The book explores the theme of suffering, faith, and the mystery of God’s ways, as Job and his friends grapple with the question of why a righteous man like Job experiences immense suffering.
Elihu’s speech continues in the subsequent chapters of Job, presenting his perspective on the matter and preparing the way for God’s own response to Job’s questions. Ultimately, God intervenes and speaks to Job, providing profound insights into His wisdom and sovereignty.
