Job 33:11

Posted on 18 May at 14:12
Listen to this article

“He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths.”

Context:This verse is part of a speech delivered by Elihu, one of Job’s friends, as he attempts to provide insight and understanding regarding Job’s suffering.

In this particular section, Elihu is emphasizing the idea that God is attentive to every aspect of human life, including the paths people choose to take.

Here’s a breakdown of the verse and its context:

“He putteth my feet in the stocks”: This phrase refers to the concept of being confined or restrained. It suggests that God has the power to restrict or limit a person’s actions or movements. In the context of Job’s suffering, Elihu is suggesting that God has allowed Job to experience great affliction or hardship.

“He marketh all my paths”: This phrase signifies God’s careful observation and scrutiny of every aspect of a person’s life. It suggests that God is aware of and pays attention to all the choices and decisions made by individuals. In Job’s case, Elihu is asserting that God has been closely watching Job’s actions and circumstances, which have led to his current state of suffering.

It is important to understand that this verse is part of a larger dialogue between Job and his friends. Elihu, while providing his perspective, is not necessarily conveying an absolute truth. The book of Job contains a complex exploration of suffering, faith, and the nature of God. Various viewpoints are presented throughout the text, and it is crucial to consider the entirety of the book to grasp its full meaning.

Overall, Job 33:11 in the KJV emphasises the idea that God is not distant or unaware of the paths and actions of individuals. It suggests that God has the ability to restrict and observe, and therefore, He is fully cognizant of the circumstances leading to Job’s suffering.
