Job 33:4
The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almightie hath giuen me life. Job 33:4 (KJV)
The book of Job is renowned for its profound exploration of human suffering and the difficult questions it raises about God’s justice. In this verse Elihu, a younger man who entered the dialogue and is often regarded as a friend of Job, declares the foundational truth that both the Spirit of God and the breath of the Almighty are the source of every human life.
The Spirit of God is presented as the active agent of creation. The phrase “hath made me” points directly to God’s creative work, affirming that He alone is the ultimate source of life for each individual. Draft 3 adds that this Spirit is the Holy Spirit, a distinct person of the triune God alongside the Father and the Son, underscoring the divine origin of our existence. This acknowledgment of the Spirit’s role highlights God’s supreme authority and sovereignty over all of creation.
The breath of the Almighty further emphasizes God’s life‑giving power. By saying “the breath of the Almighty hath given me life,” the verse teaches that God not only created humanity but also continually sustains and animates each person through His breath, which represents the life‑force imparted to every human being.
Job 33:4 also reflects the biblical doctrine of imago Dei—the truth that humans are created in the image of God. Recognizing that our very breath comes from the Almighty reminds us of the spiritual dimension inherent in every person and the inherent dignity that accompanies that divine imprint.
Application of this truth is clear.
When we understand that God Himself is the giver and sustainer of life, we are called to live with purpose, valuing the precious gift we have received. This awareness should shape our attitudes toward others, prompting us to treat every person with respect and dignity, ever mindful of the divine spark that resides within each human being.
