Job 36:15

Listen to this article

“He delivereth the poor in his affliction, and openeth their ears in oppression.”

This verse is part of a larger speech given by Elihu, one of Job’s friends, who is responding to Job’s lamentations and attempting to offer insight and wisdom regarding God’s ways. In this particular verse, Elihu emphasizes God’s role in delivering the poor and oppressed in their time of affliction.

God’s Deliverance:The verse starts with the affirmation that God delivers the poor in their affliction. This highlights God’s compassion and care for those who are suffering. Throughout the Bible, we see God’s concern for the marginalized, oppressed, and downtrodden. He is a refuge and helper to those in need, and He has the power to rescue and deliver them from their troubles.

Opening Ears in Oppression:The second part of the verse speaks of God opening the ears of the oppressed. This can be understood in a couple of ways. Firstly, it may refer to God’s ability to make people attentive and receptive to His voice and guidance even in the midst of their struggles. In times of oppression, people may be consumed by their hardships and fail to perceive God’s voice and direction. But God can graciously open their ears to hear His message of hope and guidance.

Secondly, it can also refer to God’s ability to make the oppressed attentive to the cries of their fellow sufferers. In times of affliction, people may become self-focused, but God can open their ears to the needs and cries of others, prompting them to offer assistance, comfort, and support to those who are also oppressed.

Overall, this verse highlights God’s compassion and intervention on behalf of the poor and oppressed. It reminds us that God is aware of our struggles and is willing to deliver us from our afflictions. It also encourages us to be attentive to His voice and to the needs of others, particularly those who are going through difficult times.

As we study this verse, we can reflect on how we can embody God’s compassion and deliverance in our own lives. We can seek to be instruments of His grace and help to those who are in need, extending His love and support to the poor and oppressed around us.
