Job 37:10

Posted on 18 May at 15:18
Listen to this article

“By the breath of God frost is given: and the breadth of the waters is straitened.”

Context:The book of Job is a profound and poetic exploration of human suffering and the nature of God’s sovereignty. Job, a righteous man, experiences immense tragedy and finds himself questioning why he is going through such hardships. In response, his friends attempt to provide explanations for his suffering, but their arguments fall short. Finally, in Job 37, God speaks to Job out of the whirlwind, asserting His power and wisdom.

Divine Control:The verse begins with the statement, “By the breath of God frost is given.” This phrase highlights the idea that God has ultimate control over the weather and natural phenomena. Frost is presented as a result of God’s breath or command. It emphasizes that even the smallest details of creation are subject to God’s authority.

The Power of God:The verse continues by stating, “and the breadth of the waters is straitened.” This phrase suggests that God has the ability to limit or restrain the waters. It speaks to His authority over the elements, including the vastness of the seas. The use of the term “breadth” indicates the expansiveness of the waters, emphasizing the contrast between God’s power and the limitations of creation.

God’s Sovereignty:Job 37:10 underscores the sovereignty of God over the natural world. It highlights His ability to bring forth frost and regulate the waters. This concept is significant in the broader context of the book of Job, as it reminds Job of God’s supremacy and wisdom. It humbles Job and reaffirms that God’s ways are beyond human comprehension.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s Control:Job 37:10 reminds us to trust in God’s control over every aspect of our lives, including the natural world. Just as God brings forth frost and limits the waters, He is fully capable of handling our circumstances. We can find comfort in knowing that He is in charge and working all things together for our good, even when we don’t understand the reasons behind our trials.
  • Humility and Reverence:Reflecting on the power and sovereignty of God should lead us to approach Him with humility and reverence. The verse emphasizes the greatness of God compared to the vastness of creation. It encourages us to acknowledge our smallness in light of His majesty and to submit ourselves to His will.
  • Seeking Wisdom:The book of Job reminds us that there are mysteries in life that we cannot fully comprehend. While we may seek to understand why certain things happen, we must humbly acknowledge that God’s wisdom is beyond our grasp. Instead of demanding answers, we should seek wisdom from God, trusting that His ways are higher than ours.

Conclusion:

Job 37:10 serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty, power, and wisdom. It encourages us to trust in His control over every aspect of our lives, approach Him with humility and reverence, and seek His wisdom rather than demanding answers. By contemplating the verse and its context, we can gain a deeper appreciation for God’s authority over the natural world and our own lives.
