Job 38:2

Posted on 18 May at 15:18
Listen to this article

“Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?”

Context:It is important to understand the context of this verse. Prior to this chapter, Job and his friends engage in a lengthy dialogue, attempting to provide explanations for Job’s suffering. However, their arguments fall short, failing to address the deeper spiritual aspects of Job’s situation. Finally, in chapter 38, God interrupts and begins to address Job directly.

Divine Rebuke:Job 38:2 captures God’s response to Job. It can be seen as a rebuke, questioning Job’s understanding and knowledge. The phrase “darkeneth counsel” implies that Job’s words have obscured or muddied the truth. God suggests that Job has spoken without possessing full knowledge or understanding of the situation. It serves as a reminder that human wisdom and understanding have limits, especially when compared to the vast wisdom of God.

Humility before God:The verse emphasizes the importance of humility before God. Job had been expressing his desire for answers and questioning God’s justice, but in this moment, God confronts Job’s lack of knowledge. The questions that follow in subsequent verses highlight the grandeur and majesty of God’s creation, reminding Job of the vastness of divine wisdom. Job’s response, in chapter 40, demonstrates a humbling recognition of his limited understanding in contrast to the greatness of God.

  • Overall, Job 38:2 is a pivotal verse in the book of Job, highlighting God’s response to Job’s questions and emphasizing the importance of humility and recognising our limitations in the face of God’s wisdom.
