Job 39:18

Posted on 18 May at 15:18
Listen to this article

“What time she lifteth up herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider.”

Context of the Verse: The book of Job is a poetic and philosophical exploration of the problem of human suffering and God’s sovereignty. Job, a righteous man, experiences intense suffering, and his friends attempt to explain his suffering as a result of his sin. However, Job maintains his innocence and seeks an audience with God. In response, God appears to Job in a whirlwind, challenging him with a series of rhetorical questions to demonstrate His wisdom and power.

Understanding the Verse:

  • Symbolism and Meaning:
  • The Ostrich:The ostrich is known for its speed, strength, and large wingspan. However, despite its impressive physical attributes, it lacks wisdom and discernment. The verse highlights the irony of this majestic creature scorning the horse and its rider, which are traditionally associated with strength and power. The implication is that physical strength alone does not equate to wisdom or superiority.
  • Lessons on Humility:The verse emphasizes the importance of humility before God. Even the most powerful creatures cannot match the wisdom and sovereignty of the Creator. It serves as a reminder that human strength and accomplishments should not lead to arrogance or the false belief in our own self-sufficiency.
  • God’s Control:The verse also reveals God’s control over His creation. The phrase “What time she lifteth up herself on high” indicates that the ostrich’s elevation is within God’s purview. It demonstrates God’s authority to exalt or humble any creature according to His divine purpose.
  • Application:

    • Humility:As believers, we are called to cultivate humility before God and others. Recognizing our limitations and acknowledging God’s sovereignty fosters a healthy perspective on our achievements and helps guard against pride.
    • Wisdom:Pursuing wisdom should be a priority in our lives. It involves seeking God’s guidance, studying His Word, and applying biblical principles to our decisions. True wisdom goes beyond mere knowledge and is rooted in a deep reverence for God.
    • Trusting God’s Timing:The phrase “What time she lifteth up herself on high” implies that there is a right time for everything. Sometimes, we may be tempted to lift ourselves up or rush ahead of God’s timing. Trusting in His perfect timing and aligning ourselves with His plans can bring about greater blessings and fulfillment.

In conclusion, Job 39:18 reminds us of the importance of humility before God and the limitations of human strength and wisdom. It calls us to seek wisdom from God, trust in His timing, and recognize His sovereignty over all creation.
