Job 39:7

He scorneth the multitude of the citie, neither regardeth he the crying of the driuer. Job 39:7 (KJV)

The book of Job is a poetic and philosophical exploration of human suffering and the question of why the righteous sometimes experience affliction. In this chapter God answers Job’s questions by highlighting His sovereignty and wisdom in the natural world. The creature described in Job 39:7 is the wild ass, also called the wild donkey, which is explicitly named a few verses earlier in Job 39:5. The verse portrays the wild ass as scornful of the multitude of the city and indifferent to the crying of the driver, showing no fear or regard for human activity and paying no attention to a human’s call or command.

This description illustrates the animal’s indifference to human presence. The reference to a city evokes a settled human community with its own pursuits, while the driver’s cry suggests a human command that the creature simply disregards. In the broader context of Job, God’s speech underscores His vast wisdom and power in creating and governing the natural world, including creatures that operate beyond human control or understanding.

The behaviour of such a creature reminds us of our limited understanding and control over the world. It humbles us to acknowledge that God’s wisdom surpasses ours and calls us to a posture of humility before Him.

Just as the wild ass does not respond to human commands, we are invited to trust in God’s ultimate authority and guidance in our lives. Even when circumstances seem out of control or beyond our comprehension, we can rely on His wisdom and sovereignty.

Contemplating the intricate and diverse aspects of the natural world can lead us to marvel at God’s creativity and power. This appreciation should inspire us to value and care for the environment as faithful stewards of His creation.

Finally, it is important to study the Bible in its entirety and consider the surrounding verses and overall themes to gain a comprehensive understanding of this passage.
