Job 40:20

Posted on 18 May at 14:12
Listen to this article

“Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play.”

Job 40:20 is a part of the larger context of Job 40 where God responds to Job out of the whirlwind.

In this section, God challenges Job’s understanding and questions him about his ability to contend with God’s power and wisdom.

This particular verse focuses on describing the behemoth, a creature of immense strength and power.

While scholars have different interpretations regarding the identity of the behemoth, it is commonly understood to represent a large and powerful creature, possibly an extinct animal or a symbol of chaos and untamable strength.

The verse begins with the statement, “Surely the mountains bring him forth food.” This highlights the behemoth’s ability to find sustenance in the mountains.

Despite its massive size and strength, the behemoth relies on the provision of God in the form of food. This demonstrates God’s care and sovereignty over His creation.

The verse also mentions that “all the beasts of the field play” in the presence of the behemoth. This may symbolize the behemoth’s dominance and authority over the animal kingdom.

It suggests that even the most powerful and intimidating animals are subordinate to the behemoth.

The language of play here might be understood metaphorically as the confident and carefree behaviour of the animals in the presence of this mighty creature.

Overall, Job 40:20 invites us to reflect on the grandeur and power of God’s creation. It emphasises God’s control over the natural world, including the large and mysterious creatures that inhabit it.

It reminds us of our humble place in the face of God’s wisdom and might, encouraging us to trust in His providence and acknowledge His supremacy.

It is important to note that the book of Job explores profound theological and philosophical questions in the face of suffering and the mystery of God’s ways.

Job’s story encourages perseverance, faith, and trust in God, even in the midst of difficult circumstances.
